She died when I was 6, so I knew her only briefly, but I have fantastic memories of her and staying at her fabulous house full of things from another age. My great-grandmother was also very green fingered, and loved her Amaryllis plants, and so I remember her house being full of blooming fragrant plants.
My mum inherited her plants 21 years ago, and so far they has never flowered. When I moved out of home, my mum gave me a cutting of my great-grandmother's Amaryllis plant. My plant flowered once, 4 years ago, but only with two flowers.
Within the past week, out of nowhere, my Amaryllis (above) has burst into full bloom, with five heady and vibrant peach flowers, and five more ready and waiting to bloom.
I can't help but smile to myself every time I look at it, and remember my great-grandmother, bending over her plants. I can't think of a better way to remember her.
I think she would be a very happy lady.
